Treasurer - Support Northamptonshire
About this role
Support Northamptonshire was formed to collaborate with all sectors and co-produce services with people who have lived experience. We are strongly mission-led, with a focus on addressing inequalities, transformation, change, and system leadership, rather than simply delivering services ourselves.
We currently operate across Northamptonshire, delivering pro-active, preventative health and wellbeing support and working with communities, voluntary organisations and wider public sector partners to create lasting change. We occupy a distinctive and valued position with a strong reputation for collaboration, responsiveness to community needs and trusted partnership working.
We are looking for a Treasurer to provide strategic oversight of Support Northamptonshire’s financial affairs.
What will you be doing?
The Treasurer will provide strategic oversight of Support Northamptonshire’s financial affairs, working with the Chief Executive, Board and external finance providers to ensure the organisation has the financial insight, controls and information needed to support sound decision-making and long-term sustainability.
The role is particularly important as the organisation continues to grow and develop its new strategy. The Treasurer will bring strong financial judgement and act as a critical friend, providing constructive challenge and ensuring that the Board has confidence in the organisation’s financial position and plans.
The Treasurer will not be expected to undertake day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll or financial administration. These functions are supported by external finance providers. The role is primarily one of strategic financial oversight, scrutiny, assurance and advice.
What are we looking for?
- Significant experience of financial management or financial oversight within an organisation or charity.
- A recognised financial or accounting qualification would be advantageous, but is not essential.
- Strong financial management expertise and an understanding or willingness to develop an understanding of the financial issues and challenges facing organisations in the charity sector.
- Experience of working with external finance, accounting or audit providers.
- Understanding of financial governance, risk management and appropriate financial controls.
- Understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship, or a willingness to develop this knowledge.
- Experience of providing strategic financial advice and constructive challenge at Board or senior management level.
In recruiting for this Treasurer role, we are particularly interested in candidates who share our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, understand the importance of tackling structural inequalities and will champion an inclusive culture across the organisation. We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences and are committed to making reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process where required.
What difference will you make?
This is an important opportunity to help shape the next chapter of Support Northamptonshire. Alongside fellow Trustees, you will play a key role in strengthening our governance, supporting the implementation of our strategy and ensuring the Board has the capacity, skills and perspective needed to guide the organisation through its next stage of growth.
Time Commitment
The expected time commitment for the Treasurer will initially be around 1½–2 days per month, while they become familiar with the organisation, its strategy and current financial arrangements. This is expected to reduce once they are fully settled into the role. The commitment will include:
Bi-monthly Board meetings, currently held online. Meetings are currently held during the daytime, although the organisation is open to discussing alternative timings to support a diverse Board.
An annual Board away day, held in person. Finance-related meetings and discussions, as required, including engagement with the organisation’s external finance providers.
Additional involvement where required, for example providing advice on significant financial matters or participating in relevant Board discussions.
