About us
SPIN is a Brighton-based charity supporting single parent families through information, social activities, advocacy and peer support. We are a small, friendly team of volunteers working together to create positive change for families within our community.
Role Overview
In this role you will help to assess needs and provide support to single parents by facilitating referrals and funding applications to local and national organisations. This role is central to ensuring that members can access essential items, services and opportunities that improve quality of life.

Support and Training
- You will have an induction into the charity and be supported by the Director and/or the Volunteer Coordinator in your role.
- You will receive appropriate guidance to do the role.
- You will have access to training run by outsider providers throughout the year.
- We hold volunteer team meetings during the year.
What you will be doing
You could be involved in all or some of the following depending on your interests and availability:
- Supporting the assessment of member needs and eligibility for help or funding.
- Assisting with sourcing donated items, support services or funded opportunities.
- Preparing and submitting referrals or funding applications on behalf of families.
- Maintaining accurate records using case management systems.
- Communicating with members, volunteers and partner organisations by email, phone or face-to-face.
- Gathering information from local voluntary sector organisations and funding bodies.
- Contributing to planning meetings and review sessions as needed.
- Working with initiative and seeking guidance when unsure.
We are looking for
- Interest in supporting single parent families who may be struggling or experiencing hardship.
- Good written communication skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to learn and use digital systems for record keeping.
- Confidence communicating via email and in person.
- Organised and proactive approach to managing tasks and reporting.
- Willingness to learn how to complete funding applications and referrals.
- A self-starter, or someone motivated to build their administration skills.
No prior experience of casework or funding applications is required – training will be provided.
Practical Considerations
- SPIN’s office is located in central Brighton (full details on our website under "Volunteering for SPIN").
- Volunteers will need their own laptop for both office and home-based work.
- Internet access required for home working.
Availability
- 1–3 days per week, hours to suit.
- Hybrid role: work from home and/or office.
- Current office day is Friday, which is preferred for meetings and planning.
