Chair
About this role
Lead Together Active into its next chapter, strengthening governance, partnerships and impact across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.
Location: Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent
Applications close: 9 a.m. Monday 12th October 2026
About Together Active
We are part of a national network of 42 Active Partnerships working to transform lives through movement, physical activity and sport. Our vision is to design out inactivity by addressing the inequalities that prevent people from living active, healthy and fulfilled lives.
Rather than primarily delivering activities ourselves, we bring organisations and communities together, facilitate strategic change, strengthen local capacity and amplify voices that are too often overlooked.
Our work focuses on people most affected by systemic inequality, including those living with low or no income, long-term health conditions or mental distress and people who experience exclusion because of gender, race, disability or other aspects of their identity. Our approach is collaborative, evidence-led and focused on communities.
About the role
As Chair, you will lead the Board in providing effective governance and strategic oversight during an important period of organisational development. You will strengthen Board effectiveness and build a trusted relationship with the interim and future Chief Executive, offering support, well-judged challenge and clear accountability while respecting operational boundaries.
You will play an important role in appointing our next permanent Chief Executive and maintain oversight of strategy, organisational performance, financial sustainability, risk, safeguarding and preparations for the next Sport England investment period. You will also support the Board in continuing to apply the principles of the Charity Governance Code and A Code for Sports Governance.
Externally, you will represent Together Active and strengthen relationships across local government, health, sport and the voluntary and community sector.
As part of England’s network of Active Partnerships, you will also have access to national expertise, shared learning and a peer community of Chairs, Chief Executives, Trustees and staff.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for an experienced Board leader who combines strong governance judgement with empathy, curiosity and excellent relationship-building skills. You may be a current or former Chair, Chief Executive, senior Trustee or non-executive leader within a charity, public body, sporting organisation or another purpose-led organisation.
You will know how to lead and develop a Board through transition, enabling Trustees to contribute effectively and take collective responsibility for decisions. You will build a trusted relationship with the Chief Executive, providing support, appropriate challenge and clear accountability.
You will bring political and partnership skills, with the credibility to represent Together Active across local government, health, sport and the voluntary and community sector. You will also be confident overseeing performance, risk and financial sustainability, including appropriate income diversification without creating mission drift.
Knowledge of physical activity, health, well-being or Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent would be beneficial but is not essential. Above all, you will be a compassionate and inclusive leader with the capacity to remain visible, responsive and meaningfully engaged.
